Can we really call the Urban Food Fest “a festival”, I’m not so sure. Perhaps the term, “intimate evening street food market” would be more appropriate. Situating a food fest next to a petrol station was not the greatest idea, but you’ve got to admire the moxy of the British public when they can take a small car park, throw a bit of food and drink at it and turn it into a party!
There were only a few stalls on offer, but once I got over my disappointment, I realised that the old addage “it’s not quantity but quality that matters” applied. For The Bell and Brisket were in attendance for some succulent salt beef bagels; who knew I’d be a sucker for blow torched cheese? Really?! My mind scanned through many different recipes to see which could be adapted to the blow torch method. Sadly, all of them involved cheese.
So I had heard about Horn OK Please, and knowing what it meant thought it was a bit of a cheesy name, so didn’t show any interest (truck drivers paint this on their trucks in india). After eating their bhel puri, I am now a big fan. Bhel puri has been a childhood favourite, and there are so many weird and wonderful variations, but Horn’s was right on the money! And considering that you can get street food like this for a couple of pence in India, it’s nice to see that Horn haven’t gone overboard as they just charge £3 for a substantial portion. Still waiting for the day when we pay the same as they do in the places where most of this street food originated.
